古英语（Old English）又称盎格鲁-撒克逊语（Anglo-Saxon），它是指盎格鲁-撒克逊国家在450年至1150年使用的语言。此后，英语不断发展，吸收外来词汇。古代英语逐渐被现代英语所取代。然而，相当一部分古代英语形成了一些特殊词汇，在今天的法律英语中仍被广泛使用。这些词在现代英语的其他风格中，特别是在英语口语中，很少使用，但仍广泛应用于法律文件中，为法律英语增添了其独特的专业风格特征。

首先，古代英语词汇具有强烈的日耳曼语特征——复合词在古代英语词汇中占有重要地位。据统计，它在史诗《贝奥武夫》中（Beowulf）在3183行诗中，有多达1069个复合词。一些复合词中不重读的部分逐渐失去独立地位，演变成词缀，如 for-，in-，-ful古英语中也广泛使用等派生法，名词后缀24个，形容词后缀15个，-dom，-hood，-ship，-ness，- the，-ful，-ish 词缀可以追溯到古代英语时期。不难发现，今天的法律英语词汇中仍然保留着大量的复合词，如：thereabouts(在(时间、地点等)附近)，thereinafter(下文，下文)，thereon（随即，立即）、theretofore（直到那时，在那时之前）、thereupon(所以，所以；立即)，hereby(本文件)，hereafter(以下)，hereof(关于此，在本文件中)，heretofore(到目前为止，在此之前)，herewith(与此同时，使用此方法)，whereas（鉴于，考虑到；就…而论）、whereafter(之后，然后，然后)等等。这些古老的复合词在英语简化运动中被淘汰，但由于它们反映了法律风格的严肃性。

It is an offense against possession and habitation.即普通法上的夜闯民宅罪，指行为人以重罪或盗窃为目的闯入他人住宅的行为。burglary”却已经演变为制定法上的“破门入室罪”，可包括在一天中任何时间进入，而非一定是破门闯入任何建筑物意图犯重罪或其他轻微犯罪的行为。但古英语在日常生活中早已被普通英语所抛弃，因此现存的古英语词汇词义单一，没有引申义。这意味古英语的语义准确，一个词对应义词。法律英语文本不同于普通文本。一旦生效，它们就具有法律效力。如果单词的意思太多，就不可避免地会引起歧义和误解。在这种情况下，没有引用意义的古代英语是法律英语文件语言的最佳选择。aforesaid(以上)，behoove(必要的，适当的)，hanged(绞刑，而不是hung）、aid and abet（同谋）、metes and bounds(边界)等。

例句：He was hanged at dawn. 黎明时被绞刑。

The aforesaid amount(s) shall include interests and reasonable fees and expenses which might be incurred for arbitration.
